Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Madeira boat tour for a first-time visitor?

For a first-time visitor with one half-day to spare, the swim-and-snorkel tour to Cabo Girão (€35-55, 3 hours) gives the most balanced experience — you see Madeira's most dramatic cliff, swim in clear water, and have a high probability of dolphin sightings on the way. Sunset cruises (€30-60, 2-3 hours) are the alternative if you'd rather stay dry. The Desertas day trip is incredible but commits you to 9 hours and is best for visitors with multiple days.

When is the best time to book a Madeira boat tour?

April through October is the main season. May, June, September, and October are the sweet spots: water is warm enough for swimming (19-22°C), seas are calmer than mid-summer, and operators have availability. July-August is hot and busy — book 5+ days ahead. November-March, only sunset cruises and short coastal trips run reliably; longer offshore trips often cancel for weather. Book direct on the operator website if you want the cheapest price; book via GetYourGuide or Viator if you want flexible cancellation.

How much do Madeira boat tours cost?

Sunset cruise €30-60. Swim/snorkel €35-55. Wildlife (dolphins/whales) €40-65. Pirate ship €35-50. Desertas full day €85-130 (€99 anchor at Bonita da Madeira). Porto Santo day cruise €57-105. Private charter €300-500/group (4-8 people, splits to €40-100/person). All per-person except private charter. See the full price index for inclusions and tips per category.

Will I see dolphins or whales?

On wildlife-specific tours, yes — usually. Common dolphins are year-round, near-guaranteed on most south-coast trips (pods of 50-300+). Bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales are also year-round. Sperm whales appear May-October, more reliably on RIB trips that reach deep water. Operators with sighting guarantees (free re-sail if no cetaceans) will tell you their actual rate — ask. On non-wildlife trips (sunset, swim) dolphin sightings happen often but aren't the primary focus.

Do Desertas Islands trips actually land on the islands?

Sometimes. Landings are not guaranteed — the reserve only permits a small number per season, and operators only attempt if conditions are very calm and the ranger approves. Most years, only 30-40% of trips successfully land. The 9-hour itinerary still includes inter-island sailing, swim stops, and lunch on board even without landing. If landing is critical, ask the operator their landing rate honestly.

Catamaran vs RIB — which is better?

Catamaran is more stable, larger, has bar + bathroom on board, slower, more comfortable in chop — best for families, photographers, anyone prone to seasickness. RIB (rigid inflatable boat) is faster, reaches deeper offshore for sperm whale sightings, you sit at sea level for close wildlife encounters, but no bathroom, no shade, and gets wet. Pick RIB for serious wildlife photography, catamaran for everything else.

I'm prone to seasickness — should I skip boat tours in Madeira?

Not necessarily. Short coastal trips (1-2 hour Funchal sunset cruises) are usually fine. Whale-watching is moderate. The Desertas day trip is the worst — 5+ hours open water on a rolling boat. Take medication 1 hour before departure (cinnarizine €4-7 at any pharmacy is the local standard), eat a light meal, sit mid-ship, and stay outside. Read the seasickness guide before booking. If it's a windy day with 25+ knots forecast, reschedule.

Where do most boat tours depart from?

Funchal Marina is the main departure port — sunset, swim, Desertas, wildlife, pirate ship, most categories. Calheta Marina hosts private charters and fishing operations (calmer west-coast waters). Porto Santo Port handles local trips around the sister island, reached via the Porto Santo Line ferry. Funchal Marina has paid parking (€2-4/hour); free street parking is a 10-min walk away.

Can I do a boat tour as a cruise passenger?

Yes for short trips. Cruise ships dock 6-10 hours in Funchal. A 2-3 hour swim/snorkel or sunset cruise fits comfortably with a 2-hour buffer. Whale-watching catamaran trips work too. Don't try the Desertas (9 hours) or Porto Santo day trip from a cruise stop — buffer is too thin. Pirate ship trips are popular with cruise families. Book online before you arrive — Funchal cruise days are busy.

Are children welcome on Madeira boat tours?

Most categories are family-friendly. Pirate ship trips (Santa Maria de Colombo) are designed for families with kids 4-12. Swim/snorkel tours typically take ages 5+. Sunset cruises are calm enough for any age but less engaging for younger kids. Wildlife and Desertas trips have age minimums of 6-8 depending on operator (open-water seasickness risk). Always check the operator's age policy before booking — some boats are 18+.

What about pregnant travellers?

Most operators allow pregnant guests on calm-water trips (sunset cruises, Cabo Girão swim) up to about 28 weeks — but it's operator-discretion and a calm-sea day. Avoid RIB trips, Desertas (9 hours rolling), and any trip in choppy weather. Bring proof-of-stage if asked. Always disclose pregnancy at booking — undisclosed boarding can be refused at the dock.

Should I book direct or through GetYourGuide / Viator?

Direct booking is usually €5-10 cheaper per person and supports the local operator. Aggregator booking (GetYourGuide, Viator) is worth it for flexible cancellation (most allow 24-hour free cancel) and English-language support if something goes wrong. We list both options on every category page — pick what suits your needs. We earn affiliate commission on aggregator bookings; this never changes the price you pay.

What should I wear and bring?

Layers. The marina is hot, mid-sea is windy and 5-10°C cooler. Pack: swimsuit (for swim trips), towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses with strap, light jacket or windbreaker, water bottle, motion-sickness medication (taken before boarding). Operators provide snorkel gear, but bring your own mask if hygiene-sensitive. Avoid flip-flops on RIBs — boat shoes or trainers grip better.

Are tips expected?

Not mandatory but appreciated. €5-10 per person on multi-hour trips is standard. Pirate ship + Desertas full-day trips, where the crew works hard for 6-9 hours, push closer to €10-15. Tips are split among crew. Cash in euros on board; some operators accept tips via card.

What if my tour is cancelled for weather?

All reputable operators refund or reschedule weather cancellations at no charge. The decision is usually made the morning of departure or the night before. Persistent NE/E winds and 25+ knot forecasts cancel trips — especially Desertas, Porto Santo, and offshore wildlife. If you're on a tight trip schedule, book your boat tour for the second day of your stay so you have a buffer day to reschedule.
